ALBANY — Sherwood Christian’s Seth King scored 19 points and Devonte Broussard had 12 as the Eagles topped Byne Christian 77-40 Thursday night at Byne Christian Academy.
“We did well,” Sherwood boys coach Vince King said. “We started off a little bit rough — turnovers, mishandling the ball, we are still at a point where we are trying to mesh together. The guys are very talented, very skilled, we’re just trying to mesh together.”
The first quarter was a high-scoring quarter. Sherwood jumped out to a 12-6 lead, but Byne stayed within striking distance thanks to solid 3-point shooting from Justin Williams and Cam Green as the Saints trailed just 22-18 at the end of the first.
Broussard led the Eagles’ attack in the second quarter, scoring six points to lead Sherwood on a 19-4 run. Byne had some chances for easy points, but they turned the ball over too many times on offense. King scored 12 first-half points to lead the Eagles while Justin Williams led Byne Christian with 12.
“I want to seem them drive more,” Byne assistant coach Quinten Sanders said. “I wanted to see them produce more on offense instead of standing around so much. Other than that, it was a vast improvement from the last time we played these guys.”
The Eagles put the game out of reach in the second half, as they went on a 15-5 run in the third quarter. The Saints were unable to hit the 3-point shots that fell in the first quarter, and the Eagles amassed a 66-36 advantage by the end of the third.
Sherwood had two other players in double figures — guard Joshua Kendrick scored 11 points and Michael Hill had 10. Colton Adams led Byne with eight points.
In the girls game, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 27-0 lead and never looked back top top Byne 75-10.
Sherwood had three players in double figures. Michaela Hudson led all scorers with 19 points. Molly Kate McClearn scored 15 and Madison Walker chipped in 14 for the Lady Eagles. The Lady Saints were led in scoring by Anna Rehberg with six points.
“I think we played a very good game tonight,” Sherwood Christian girls coach Lakeshia Elder said. “We worked on some things such as offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, and moving the ball around to get some open shots.”
