ALBANY — Sherwood Christian Academy standout linebacker Steven Tosky is taking his athletic talent to Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio. He signed his football letter-of-intent Wednesday morning in the SCA cafeteria.
Tosky transferred to Sherwood from Lee County after his sophomore year. In his two years at SCA, he recorded 218 tackles. He played in both Georgia’s East-West All-Star Game and the GICAA All-Star Game and was an all-state and all-region performer.
During his senior year, Tosky helped the Eagles to the 2014 GICAA state championship. He recorded 123 tackles, 80 of them solo. He also recorded two sacks.
Tosky chose Hiram over Greensboro, Trinity International and Point University.
“It’s better educationally. I’ll get a good education up there,” Tosky said. “It’s somewhere that God led me to go. The coaches are pretty cool and the players are pretty cool too.”
Steven’s mother, Cristina Tosky, said that her son’s life-long dream was to play college football.
“He wanted to play for Florida State, but he didn’t quite grow big enough for that,” she said.
At 5-foot, 10-inches, Tosky wasn’t quite big enough to play major college football, but it didn’t stop him from reaching his goal.
“My height was a big issue. If I was 6-1, it would be all right,” Tosky said. “After going to public school for a little bit and coming here, it was a little change, but you still got to work through it and get better every day.”
Getting better was something Tosky impressed upon his teammates and coaches ever since his arrival.
“Since he’s been here, Steven has elevated the expectations of our football program,” SCA coach Otis Covington said. “He always gave 100 percent all the time in practice. He never took plays off.”
According to Covington, Tosky’s influence and work-ethic were key factors in the Eagles’ success.
“Before he came here, we didn’t have a lot of success,” Covington said. “He set the example in practice and he raised our standards.”
