SMITHVILLE — Gov. Sonny Perdue’s office announced Tuesday that the city of Smithville had received loan/subsidy funding totaling $292,800 to finance construction of a new well for the city.

The funds are being made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“This is certainly great news for the city of Smithville,” newly re-elected City Councilman Vincent Cutts said Tuesday when informed of the governor’s announcement. “I knew the city had applied for the funding, but I was not aware we had gotten it. It’s something that’s needed in our community.

“I don’t really have enough information to comment further because I haven’t spoken with our city clerk, but this is some needed good news.”

Attempts to reach Smithville officials Tuesday were unsuccessful, while the city’s attorney, Tommy Coleman, was in meetings and unavailable.

The statement from Perdue’s office noted that funding for the project included a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund loan of $175,680 and a DWSRF subsidy of $117,120.

“The total project cost is $292,800 with GEFA (Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority) providing the entire amount,” the statement said. “Consistent with GEFA’s ARRA financing terms for communities that are not OneGeorgia eligible, 40 percent (up to $117,120) of the principle will be forgiven, subject to the loan contract provision.

“The city will pay 3 percent interest on the loan portion up to a maximum of $175,680 for 20 years.”

The drinking well is part of an ongoing revitalization program in the small north Lee County community.
