ATLANTA — The state’s highest court scolded a former South Georgia Judge and sent a message to other judges across the state saying judges need to “respect and follow the law,” if the public is to respect the law.

The Georgia Supreme Court disbarred former Alapaha Circuit Superior Court Judge Brooks Blitch Monday morning.

In 2009, Judge Blitch pleaded guilty to a federal corruption charge and was sentenced to three years on probation and a fine of $100,000. He resigned after the Judicial Qualifications Commission brought charges against him.

“We cannot rightfully expect members of the public to respect the law and remain confident in the integrity and impartiality of our judiciary where judges themselves do not respect and follow the law,” today’s opinion says.

The court also effectively disbarred former federal judge Jack Camp after accepting the voluntary surrender of his law license. Camp, who pleaded guilty Nov. 19, 2010 to drug charges, surrendered his judicial position as a condition of the plea deal.
