Darton baseball beats West Georgia Tech

Colton Thomas scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning and pitcher Taylor Ferringer worked a scoreless ninth to shut down West Georgia Tech for a 3-2 victory Tuesday afternoon in Douglasville.

Mike Huggins led off the ninth with a walk, advanced to second on William Golden’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Thomas’ RBI single.

Three pitches later, Thomas stole third and scored on a throwing error.

Jeremy Beasley earned the victory in relief.

The Cavaliers (22-11) were scheduled to play Brewton Parker today, however, that game has been canceled. Darton will play host to West Georgia Tech on Friday at 4 p.m.

Lee County baseball beats Lowndes

Michael Reddick pitched five shutout innings and Andrew Wingate earned his third save as Lee County beat Lowndes 4-2 in a Region 1-AAAAAA game Tuesday night at Noel George Field.

The Trojans used a solo homer from Tyler Simon and a two-run blast from Malik Spratling to improve to 11-4 overall, 4-1 in Region 1-AAAAAA play.

Jordan Reep went 3 for 4 with a double.

The Trojans play host to Perry tonight at 6 p.m. in a nonregion game, then return to region play with a game against Valdosta Friday night at 7 p.m.

Deerfield-Windsor tennis sweeps Westwood

The Deerfield-Windsor Lady Knights tennis team improved to 7-1 on the season by defeating Westwood 6-0 on Monday.

In singles play, Lilia Sullivan defeated McKenlee Coleman 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. In No. 2 singles, Stephanie Mathes defeated Bella Underwood (6-4, 6-2), while Caroline Durland topped Westwood’s Morgan Godwin at No. 3 (6-4, 4-6, 11-9). In No. 4 singles, Anna Marie Saunders defeated Merritt Daniels 8-1.

In girls doubles, Joyner Tyson and Katerina Mathes defeated Callie Smith and Ashley Bush (6-1, 6-2) at No. 1, while Gabby Pinero and Sarah Perrine defeated Mattie Rogers and Amanda Horsey 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles.

On the boys side, Deerfield-Windsor took a 5-1 victory over Westwood.

Westwood’s Cameron Godwin defeated Cohen Bonner 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Deerfield’s Fletcher Cromartie topped Westwood’s Mac Collins (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2, while Reed Reynolds defeated Westwood’s Akshay Patel (6-3, 6-1) at No. 3. Bo Williams defeated Westwood’s Jason Pham 8-1 at No. 4.

In doubles play, Will Calhoun and Tyler Lowe defeated Westwood’s Brandon Pham and Brent Johnson (6-0, 6-3) at No. 1, while Deerfield’s Nick Myers and Rob Pilcher defeated Brock Allen and Greyson Shiver (1-6, 7-5, 10-8) at No. 2.

Both Deerfield-Windsor teams will play at Baconton Charter on Thursday.

Albany State softball swept by Georgia College

The Albany State Lady Rams were defeated in a doubleheader by the Georgia College Lady Bobcats on Monday, falling 15-1 and 5-0. With the pair of losses, ASU falls to 10-11 on the season.

In the first game, Albany State grabbed an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Lady Rams scored their run when Toni Coleman belted a single to score Tiffany Massey.

However, the rest of the contest belonged to Georgia College. After tying the score in the second inning, the Lady Bobcats exploded for eight runs in the third inning to take a 9-1 lead. GC added three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game via the eight run-fifth inning rule.

The Lady Rams only collected five hits and committed six errors.

In the second game, the Lady Rams were able to keep the Lady Bobcats’ scoring down in the second game but they could not muster any runs of their own. Georgia College jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. GC added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning and another one in the seventh.

Albany State only recorded three hits and committed three errors.
