DWS hosting first round of GISA tourney on Thursday

The Deerfield-Windsor boys basketball team will play host to the first two rounds of the GISA Class AAA state tournament on Thursday. The original dates were to have the games played tonight, but the state office postponed the games to Thursday because of inclement weather in north Georgia.

A pair of games will be played at the W.T. Henry Gymnasium. John Milledge will meet Heritage at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Deerfield-Windsor boys against Trinity-Christian of Dublin at 7 p.m.

The winners will meet on Saturday in the state quarterfinals.

Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults.

Darton hoops advances in tournament

The Darton State College women’s basketball team beat Atlanta Metro 77-56 Tuesday night to win the quarterfinals of the GCAA Women’s Basketball Championship and move on to the semifinals.

In the opening minutes of the first half, Darton took an early lead and never let it go. The lopsided end result didn’t accurately reflect the neck-and-neck first half as the Lady Cavaliers found themselves ahead by just six points as they entered the second half at 37-31.

Then sophomore guard Shanea Armbrister sparked an offensive rally that outscored Atlanta Metro 40-25 in the second half. Armbrister finished with a game-high 33 points and 19 rebounds. She remains the top scorer in the NJCAA with 789 points this season.

Tyesha Smith also had a double-double, scoring 17 points and taking 13 rebounds. Shea Fleullen scored 15 points and had four assists.

The win carries top-seeded Darton onto the semifinal round, tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday night in the Cavalier Arena against either Georgia Highlands or Georgia Perimeter.

Atlanta Metro, the eighth seed, is eliminated from the tournament.

Darton is now 27-4 and remains undefeated in the Cavalier Arena this season.
