Worth County baseball beats Pelham

Cody Reddell pitched five innings of shutout baseball to help Worth County top Pelham 3-0 on Saturday. Reddell struck out nine before yielding to Austin Jackson.

Denzell Gowdy led the offense, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double. Shelby Cox went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Brennan Kite went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

No structural damage for Georgia’s Tyler

University of Georgia pitcher Robert Tyler underwent an MRI on his right elbow Saturday in Athens and no structural damage was noted.

The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is intact. Tyler’s injury is muscular in nature and he will be progressed back to pitching as tolerated.

Tyler, a sophomore native of Cordele, Ga., is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts this season. He has 22 strikeouts and six walks in 14 innings pitched. On Friday, he made a start against Georgia Southern in Statesboro and left the game due to an injury with two outs in the fourth inning.

Ex-Knick Mason dies

Longtime NBA player Anthony Mason, who helped the New York Knicks reach the 1994 NBA Finals, died early Saturday morning at the age of 48.

Mason, a 13-year NBA veteran, had been diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier this month. He was in the hospital for nearly a month while recovering from multiple heart surgeries and heart attacks.

“First I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciates it,” his son, Anthony Mason Jr., said Saturday. “Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother … but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father — Big Mase — put up an incredible fight, dealing with a severe heart issue. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.”

Mason’s other son Antoine, a senior basketball player at Auburn, said earlier this week that his father was “getting better” following multiple heart surgeries.

Mason, a 6-foot-7 forward, played for the Knicks from 1991-1996 and then for the Charlotte Hornets until 2000. He made his only All-Star team in 2001 as a member of the Miami Heat.

Harvick wins Xfinity Race

If you had to pick one driver to knock Joey Logano off his pedestal at Atlanta Motor Speedway, you couldn’t make a better choice than Kevin Harvick.

Holding off Logano after a restart on Lap 140 of 163, Harvick won Saturday’s Hisense 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race, ending a success streak that saw Logano beat Harvick for the win in the Daytona 500 and edge Harvick for the Coors Light Pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (1 p.m. ET on FOX) at AMS.

The victory was Harvick’s third straight at Atlanta and fourth overall. He won for the 45th time in the XFINITY Series, third most all-time. It was also the first victory for Dave Elenz as a crew chief.

After Logano developed a left rear wheel vibration during the final run, Harvick pulled away and crossed the finish line 1.208 seconds ahead of Logano, who finished second at Atlanta for the second straight season.
