Darton baseball wins first regular season title

In a monumental first for the Darton State College baseball program, the Cavaliers clinched the 2015 regular season GCAA title on Saturday after sweeping a double-header at Georgia Perimeter College.

“This is an amazing accomplishment by an outstanding group of young men,” Darton head baseball coach Scot Hemmings said. “Words cannot describe the joy we have to be the team to bring this great institution its first ever regular season conference championship.”

The Cavaliers watched results from rival ABAC last week, who challenged Darton’s conference win-loss record for the title. ABAC struggled in its series with Andrew College, however, and fell to 18-10. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers won three of four games with the Jaguars to finish with a conference record of 23-9.

“We have come very close the last three years and have finally achieved a milestone,” Hemmings said, adding, “Our players also understand that this is just one goal and not the ultimate goal of getting to Grand Junction, Colorado to compete for a national championship.

“I will let them enjoy their accomplishment for about 24 more hours and then we are going to focus our attention on winning the conference tournament.”

Unlike any previous GCAA tournament, however, Darton will not rely upon its outcome to advance to the District Championships as winning the regular season title has given the Cavs a tournament bye to District. The outstanding Cavalier pitching staff appreciates this fact.

“Honestly, it’s a feeling of relief,” starting freshman pitcher Rabon Martin (6-2, 3.52 ERA) said. “We’ve been working hard for this all year.”

Darton will host the GCAA tournament May 6-9 at Darton. They’ll host one more non-conference game, however, on Friday as they take on nationally-ranked Chipola College. The game, part of DSC Baseball’s Campus/Community Appreciation Night will be followed by a celebratory firework show and admission is free.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
