Seabrooks named state AD of Year

Johnny Seabrooks, Dougherty County School System Director of Athletics, has been selected by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association as the State Athletic Director of the Year for the 2014-15 school year.

Seabrooks will be presented the award at the GADA Annual Conference on March 25 in Savannah. Seabrooks has also been nominated for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association Distinguished Service Award for 2015.

Darton baseball falls to East Georgia

East Georgia scored three runs in the ninth inning to post an 8-7 victory over Darton State College Tuesday afternoon. Pitcher Rabon Martin started the game and went six and two-thirds innings. He allowed three runs on nine hits.

T.J. Roberts took the loss.

Tyler Morris led the Cavaliers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Max Thomas finished 1-for-3 with a solo homer, while Mike Huggins went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Darton will play East Georgia again on Friday at 6 p.m.

All-star weekend to be held at Darton

All-Star Weekend will be held on March 13-14 at Darton State’s College’s Cavalier Arena. All Star Weekend will feature an Elementary All-Star Basketball Classic, Middle School Basketball Showcase, Boys & Girls High School All-Star Basketball Games, Point guard Skills & Drills Camp and a Youth Cheer & Dance Showcase.

All-Star Weekend will provide a positive environment for all who participate, allow the players and coaches to experience the excitement and camaraderie involved with an All-Star event and give the fans another opportunity to enjoy competitive boys’ and girls’ basketball games among the top players in the area.

Nearly 400 kids will participate in the 2015 All-Star Weekend event.

Deerfield-Windsor tennis teams win

The Deerfield-Windsor boys and girls tennis teams opened their season with a pair of shutout victories against Tiftarea on Monday. The boys won 5-0. Will Calhoun defeated Austin Wiggins 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Cohen Bonner topped Tiftarea’s Cole McClain (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles, while at No. 3 singles, Deerfield’s Bo Williams topped Austin Wiggins 8-1.

In the boys No. 1 doubles, Deerfield-Windsor’s Reed Reynolds and Fletcher Cromartie defeated Tiftarea’s Mitch Layfield and Taylor Dukes (6-3, 1-6, 10-6), while Rob Pilcher and Nick Myers defeated Tiftarea’s Nathan DuVall and Trent Hobbs at No. 2 doubles (6-1, 6-3).

The Deerfield-Windsor girls defeated Tiftarea 6-0.

Lilia Sullivan defeated Alexandria Branch 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles; Sarah Perrine defeated Brooke Wilson (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles; Gabby Pinnero defeated Tiftarea’s Mary Buckner (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 singles, while Anna Marie Saunders defeated Tiftarea’s Alexandria Branch 8-2 at No. 4 singles.

In the girls No. 1 doubles, Joyner Tyson and Katerina Mathes defeated Tiftarea’s Taylor Gray and Abby Carswell (6-0, 6-0), while Stephanie Mathes and Caroline Durland defeated Millie Albritton and Elizabeth McClain at No. 2 doubles (6-0, 6-1).

Cook tops Worth County baseball

Cook pitcher Dalton Rentz hurled a complete-game victory to help the Hornets top Worth County in Region 1-AAAA baseball action last Monday night. The Cook senior pitcher allowed just one run, while striking out 11 in a 3-1 victory. He also aided his own cause, leading off the game with a solo homer.

Denzell Gowdy finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double to lead the Rams.

The loss overshadowed a strong pitching performance from Worth’s Jake Jones, who went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned), striking out six before yielding to Gowdy who allowed a run and struck out three batters.

Lady Rams softball tops Winston-Salem State

Ambrionna Atkism and Anria Peterson each collected two hits to lead the Albany State Lady Rams to a 2-0 win over the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams on Monday.

The two teams engaged in a scoreless contest until the bottom of the fourth inning. Peterson hit a double to score Atkism, and Albany State had a 1-0 lead.

ASU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Toni Coleman connected on her second homer of the season to help ASU take a 2-0 lead.

Alexa Lopez was the winning pitcher for ASU.

Florida Tech beats Albany State softball

Albany State couldn’t keep its momentum against Florida Tech on Monday. ASU dropped a 7-1 decision to fall to 5-6 overall.

Florida Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Albany State answered in the bottom of the inning when Toni Coleman smashed a double to score Tiffany Massey to tie the score at one.

That was the only run the Lady Rams could muster. The Lady Panthers added two runs in the second inning and one each in the fourth and sixth innings to pull away from ASU.

The Lady Rams only recorded four hits but also had five errors that contributed to some of FIT’s runs. Albany State pitcher Tiffany Massey took the mound loss.

Albany State will return to action on Thursday when it travels to Jasper, Ala. to participate in the 2015 SIAC Women’s Softball Crossover Tournament. The tournament is scheduled for March 12-14. The Lady Rams will battle Kentucky State on the first day. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
