Carr wins national wrestling title
Darton State College 165-pounder Bryce Carr swept four matches to become the 2015 NJCAA Wrestling Champion and an All American over the weekend at the NJCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Carr, a Darton sophomore and product of West Laurens High School in Dublin, won every national match by decision as he dominated his way to the title.
“He had the toughest road to the finals,” Darton State College head wrestling coach James Hicks said. “Every kid he wrestled in the tournament ended up being an All American.”
Carr, despite an awesome 30-1 record, was ranked eighth going into the tournament.
“I guess we’re still not getting enough respect (in the rankings) despite what we’ve done,” Hicks said. “He should have been ranked in the top three, but, we’ll just take the national champion (title).”
Carr finished with a 34-1 record and led the Cavaliers to a third-place finish among non-scholarship schools and 14th place among all divisions. For the record, Carr’s individual championship title was over all divisions.
As was Darton’s 174-pounder Anthony Smith, who finished eighth and became Darton’s first wrestler to become a two-time All American.
Darton finished with 41.5 points. Iowa Central won with 158.5 points. Nassau won the non-scholarship division with 62 points and placed 10th overall.
Nuggets dismiss Shaw as coach
Denver Nuggets head coach Brian Shaw was fired Tuesday.
Shaw was 20-39 this season with the Nuggets, who began the day seven games out of last place in the Western Conference and 12 1/2 games out of the eighth playoff spot in the conference.
Shaw came under fire well before this week, but his comments that his team was a “laughing stock” after Monday’s practice drew national attention.
The Nuggets on Friday night broke a huddle with a chant of “1-2-3 … six weeks.” Shaw said it was not a reference to the amount of time left in the season but to a home losing streak, not a signal that the team had given up on the 2014-15 season.
The 48-year-old who played for and coached with Phil Jackson was a hot coaching candidate when the Nuggets handed him the keys to a playoff team before the 2013 season.
Denver missed the playoffs in his first season with a 36-46 record.
Shaw was a first-round draft pick in 1988 and played in the NBA for 14 seasons with the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers.
