Seminole County boys advance to state semifinals

Seminole County rolled to an 89-81 victory over Manchester Wednesday night in the GHSA boys Class AA state basketball tournament. The victory sends the Indians to the state semifinals where they will meet Vidalia at Columbus State University Friday night.

After Herald Super 6er Jordan Harris suffered a deep cut above his left eye in the first half, Harris scored 32 of his game-high 42 points in the second half.

“That was an unbelievable performance,” Seminole County boys coach Kevin Godwin said. “He took over in the second half … there was no denying him.”

Anfernee King finished with 18 points, while Jahmyka Pearson added 14 for the Indians.

Seminole County led by two at the end of the third quarter before buildings leads as high as 12 in the final quarter. They iced the game late on free throws.

Americus-Sumter boys fall

The Americus-Sumter boys made it to the Class AAAA state quarterfinals Wednesday night. However, Liberty County put an end to the Panthers’ season with a 58-52 victory.

No other details about the game were available.

Darton to cancel wrestling program

Darton State College will cancel its wrestling program after the season. Nine members of the wrestling team will compete for national championships this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa.

Coach James Hicks said school administrators said declining enrollments as well as athletic department shortfalls in the budget led to the program cut.

“We’re not a scholarship program, so all our guys come here out of the love of wrestling,” Hicks said. “It’s a shame that opportunity is now gone.”

DWS hosting first round of GISA tourney today

The Deerfield-Windsor boys basketball team will play host to the first two rounds of the GISA Class AAA state tournament tonight. The original dates were to have the games played on Wednesday, but the state office postponed the games to tonight because of inclement weather in north Georgia.

A pair of games will be played at the W.T. Henry Gymnasium. John Milledge will meet Heritage at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Deerfield-Windsor boys against Trinity-Christian of Dublin at 7 p.m.

The winners will meet on Saturday in the state quarterfinals.

Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults.
