Darton State College baseball beats Gulf Coast

The Darton State College baseball team beat Gulf Coast 6-3 on Friday. The win improved Darton to 12-7. Gulf Coast (Panama City, Fla.) fell to 11-7.

Colton Thomas led at the plate with three hits. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the second and fifth innings.

Freshman pitcher Taylor Ferringer was in control on the hill. Gulf Coast managed just two hits off of the Cavaliers’ pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one during his three innings of work.

Trey Johnson recorded the win for Cavaliers. He allowed three runs over five innings. Johnson struck out one, walked one and gave up six hits. Then TJ Roberts put away the final three outs to record the save.

Darton never trailed after scoring two runs in the first on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by sophomore Luis Salas. Darton scored two more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead, but Gulf Coast closed the deficit by pushing three runs in the top of the fifth.

Johnson put an end to their attempt at a comeback to close the inning.

After posting one run in the fifth on an RBI single by Max Thomas to go up 5-3, the Cavaliers again scored one more in the eighth.

Darton will travel to Gordon College on Tuesday and then hosts Gordon at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

McIlroy misses cut at Honda

World number one Rory McIlroy was set to miss the cut at the Honda Classic after shooting a four-over 74 in his second round on Friday to leave him at seven over-par for the tournament.

Heavy rain leading to standing water on the greens caused delays of over two hours on Friday morning but when play did resume, McIlroy found it hard going in the Champion Course’s notorious winds.

The Northern Irishman, playing in his first PGA Tour event of the year, bogeyed his first hole, the par-4 10th, and then made another bogey after finding water on the 18th.

After a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole he closed out his round with three bogeys from the last four holes.

The cut is projected for three over-par and while it may change before the leaders finish their rain-delayed round on Saturday, McIlroy can safely pack his bags.

“I’m pissed off. I don’t like missing cuts. You want to be playing on the weekend, and I’m not going to be playing which is not nice,” said McIlroy.

Falcons waive Douglas, Blalock

The Atlanta Falcons continued to clear unwanted players off new coach Dan Quinn’s roster Friday by releasing wide receiver Harry Douglas and guard Justin Blalock.

Those moves come a day after the team released veteran running back Steven Jackson, furthering an apparent offensive makeover under new coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Douglas was due to make $3.5 million in the final year of the four-year, $12.5 million contract he signed with the Falcons in 2012.

The 6-foot, 183-pound Douglas was selected by the Falcons in the third round (84th overall) of the 2008 draft. He played in 91 games (26 starts) and totaled 3,130 receiving yards on 258 catches, with eight touchdowns. Last season, he had 51 catches for 556 yards and two scores in 12 games.

Blalock was scheduled to make $4.75 million in the fifth year of a six-year deal worth $38.4 million. He will still count $4.12 million against the salary cap due to signing bonus proration.

Blalock, 31, started 125 games in eight years for Atlanta, but the 6-foot-4, 326-pounder is not considered a fit for Shanahan’s zone-blocking scheme.
