ACRI Community night features ASU president

ALBANY — The Albany Civil Rights Institute’s May 26 Community Night event will feature a town hall meeting address by Albany State University President Art Dunning concerning the merger of Albany State and Darton State College.

The Community Night town hall will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 325 Whitney Ave., across the street from the Civil Rights Institute. It starts at 6:30 p.m.

ACRI Executive Director Frank Wilson said, “The meeting was moved to Shiloh because we expect a larger than usual crowd for this much-discussed community issue.”

This meeting is open to the public.

Museums offer military personnel free admission

THOMASVILLE — The Jack Hadley Black History Museum here is one of more than 2,000 museums across America to offer free admission to military personnel and their families this summer in collaboration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families and the Department of Defense.

Museums will offer free admission to the nation’s active duty military personnel, including National Guard and Reserve, and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Leadership support for Blue Star Families programming and promotional materials have been provided by MetLife Foundation. The program also provides families an opportunity to enjoy the nation’s cultural heritage and learn more about their new communities after a military move. Sumter chamber seminars help with social media

AMERICUS — Want to know more ways to promote your business? Not sure how to market your business on social media? Don’t worry, help is available.

The Sumter County Chamber of Commerce will present “Social Media Basics: The How, What & Why of Social Media Marketing” and “Power of the Inbox: Tips & Tricks of Email Marketing” today. The former session will run from 9-11 a.m., the latter from 1-3 p.m.

Cost is $5 per session for chamber members and $10 for non-members. The sessions will be conducted at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center’s Education Building at 132 U.S. Highway 280 West, Suite A.

GDOT awards statewide construction contracts

ATLANTA — At least four Southwest Georgia projects are included in 27 contracts awarded Friday by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Included were a bridge rehabilitation project on U.S. Highway 27 in Decatur County, nearly 13.8 miles of resurfacing on Georgia Highway 37 in Colquitt County from Ga. 35 to the Cook County line, just over 21.3 miles of resurfacing of U.S. Highway 19 in Thomas County from the Mitchell County line to Woodruff Farm Road, and just under three-quarters of a mile of resurfacing of Georgia Highway 273 in Early County.

Also, GDOT has contracts for sharp curve treatment in various counties in the state.

About 48 percent — almost $119 million — of the total awards were for road resurfacing and maintenance projects.
