MCDONOUGH — Condolences began pouring in Monday morning after word spread that renowned artist Andy Davis died overnight from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash Friday.
Gov. Nathan Deal, who tapped Davis, 53, last month to create a life-size bronze statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for Liberty Plaza, said his death is a tragedy for the state.
“I’m deeply saddened by the death of Andy Davis,” said Deal. “This tragedy is not only a loss for his family, but for the Henry County community and our state. He leaves behind a legacy of excellent work, and I regret that will not include a statue on our Capitol grounds that many generations of Georgians would have admired. Sandra and I offer our prayers, support and encouragement to his family during this difficult time.”
Davis’ wife, Gerri Davis, said Monday morning the family would release a statement that afternoon. She said her husband was “on Cloud 9” in the days before he died.
“He had a huge heart and was on Cloud 9 this week,” she said. “He was in a very good place in his life.”
Officials with McDonough Main Street Program also issued a statement.
“Not only was Andy a gifted artist, but he was also devoted father and husband and a very loyal friend,” said officials. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to The Davis Family and everyone who had the privilege and honor of calling him friend.”
McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland posted a statement on the city’s Facebook page.
“The hearts of each of our citizens, members of the McDonough Arts Council and the Hood Street Arts Center are saddened today by the passing of our friend and master sculptor, Andy Davis,” Copeland said. “Please keep his wife, Gerri, and their children, Stephanie and Alex, and other family members in your thoughts and prayers.”
The Henry County Board of Commissioners released a statement through spokeswoman Melissa Robinson:
