ALBANY – Whether you’re into running in the sun or just splashing in the water on a hot summer day, the Summer Splash 5k promises a day of health, wealth and wet and wild family fun, with food giveaways, health screenings, food trucks and more.

Kids will receive free water balloons and water guns during the July 27 event at Mary Young Cummings Memorial Park, and it will feature what organizer Adam Inyang, an Albany businessman, said is the largest slip and slide in southwest Georgia.

Race registration is now open at a cost of $30, but all other activities will be free of charge. Money raised will go toward food and wellness programs in the south and east Albany areas.

“Our theme is ‘Health is Wealth,’ and that’s what we’re trying to bring to the underserved parts of Albany,” said Inyang, founder of Albany Forward. “Hopefully Summer Splash is able to pour some love and resources and inspiration back into Albany’s south side. Then we’re gonna do it on the east side.”

The top three finishers in the run will be recognized for the following categories: ages under 13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-plus. Teams of up to 10 runners are also encouraged to register.

Security will be present and first aid available, Inyang said.

Albany Forward has partnered with sponsors that include Albany Cares, Buffalo Rock Co., eZeeCopy, Reginald’s Safe Haven and SOWEGA Rising for the event, and has also received assistance from Ward VI City Commissioner Demetrius Young and the city’s Recreation and Parks Department.
