ALBANY — Albany police say 13-year-old Fred Brown drowned in a retention pond Sunday afternoon while fishing with his 21-year-old brother.

ALBANY — A Fitzgerald woman has won a $20,000 prize from the Georgia Lottery. Jan Hidi, 60, was selected as a big winner in the Georgia Lottery’s $1 & $2 Play It Again Second Chance Promotion. She won her prize recently in Atlanta.

ALBANY — The investigation of a suspicious death of the wife of an Albany Marine in 2011 will remain inactive despite new forensic opinions provided by the woman’s family, officials with the Dougherty District Attorney’s Office say.
4. Metro Albany Winn-Dixies to convert into Harveys supermarkets
ALBANY — Ten grocery stores, including a pair in metro Albany, will be getting name changes soon, officials with Bi-Lo Holdings announced Friday. The Winn-Dixie supermarkets at 2800 Old Dawson Road in Albany and at 1553 U.S. Highway 19 South, Leesburg, will be rebranded as Harveys stores. A third nearby Winn Dixie located at 1208 Crawford St. in Americus will also become a Harveys.

ALBANY — A police officer of the Dougherty County School System Police with an “exemplary” record has been fired following accusations of “roughing” up a student and breaking his arm, school officials say.
