TOP 25 ROUNDUP: Texas stuns Oklahoma in Red River rivalry
The Sports Xchange
DALLAS — Unranked Texas used a potent rushing attack to rack up 313 yards and a stifling defense to stun No. 10 Oklahoma 24-17 on Saturday in the Red River Rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl.
The Longhorns (2-4) salvaged what seemed to be a lost season by dominating in the trenches against the previously unbeaten Sooners.
Texas got 117 yards on the ground by running back D’Onta Foreman on just nine carries and 115 more from quarterback Jerrod Heard, who hails from Denton, about 35 minutes from where this game has been played since 1929. The Longhorns passed for just 55 yards, 24 of which came on a shovel pass in the first quarter.
Oklahoma (4-1) had 278 yards, all but 85 in the second half.
No. 1 Ohio State 49, Maryland 28
Ohio State used its array of quarterbacks to hold off the upset bid of Maryland as the top-ranked Buckeyes pulled away from an early third quarter tie with 28 consecutive points.
Quarterback Cardale Jones passed for two touchdowns, backup J.T. Barrett ran for three in red-zone situations and wide receiver and former quarterback Braxton Miller caught a touchdown pass. Jones’ second touchdown, a 48-yard throw to Jalin Marshall midway through the third quarter, gave Ohio State (6-0) a 28-21 lead and Barrett then scored from 1 yard to make it 35-21.
Quarterback Perry Hills of Maryland (2-4), in his first start in four games, ran for touchdowns late in the first half and to open the third quarter to rally Maryland into a 21-21 tie.
No. 2 TCU 52, Kansas State 45
Second-ranked TCU stormed back from an 18-point halftime deficit to notch a victory over Kansas State in front of 53,671 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium, the third largest crowd in school history.
The Horned Frogs outscored the Wildcats 35-10 after the intermission. Kansas State had a streak of 49 straight victories when leading at halftime snapped last week at Oklahoma State.
TCU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) got back into the game quickly when safety Derrick Kindred picked off a Joe Hubener pass and raced 60 yards for a touchdown, cutting its deficit to 35-24.
No. 3 Baylor 66, Kansas 7
Junior quarterback Seth Russell passed for 246 yards and three touchdowns and junior running back Shock Linwood added 135 yards rushing as Baylor stomped Kansas.
Russell and Linwood played only in the first half. They were among several Baylor regulars who returned to the sideline for the second half without wearing pads.
The Bears (5-0) needed slightly more than 2 minutes to drive 75 yards for their first touchdown and went on to score on each of their first eight possessions. They totaled 643 yards after netting 425 in the first half, while establishing a 52-7 margin at the break. The Jayhawks (0-5) remain winless under first-year coach David Beaty and have been outscored 227-95.
No. 13 Michigan 38, Northwestern 0
Michigan’s fifth consecutive victory set the stage for a showdown with rival Michigan State next week and might have opened some eyes to the Wolverines as a legitimate contender.
Michigan hit the accelerator on the opening drive and Northwestern left with tire marks on their backs by the time the final seconds ticked off the clock at Michigan Stadium.
The Wolverines have not allowed a point in the last 12 quarters, outscoring the opposition 97-0. The Wildcats (5-1) mustered 38 yards on 25 running plays (1.5 yards per rush), had 168 total yards and converted just two of 13 third downs.
No. 15 Notre Dame 41, Navy 24
Running back C.J. Prosise rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns as No. 15 Notre Dame rolled over Navy.
Quarterback DeShone Kizer passed for 281 yards and one touchdown and ran for one more. Notre Dame (5-1) scored 14 points off turnovers and posted a 459-340 advantage in total yards.
The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for Navy (4-1). Quarterback Keenan Reynolds rushed for 110 yards despite missing most of the second quarter. He completed only 2 of 4 passes for 16 yards.
Notre Dame clung to a 24-21 halftime lead before a special-teams takeaway helped to turn the momentum.
No. 22 Iowa 29, Illinois 20
Iowa continued its winning ways, defeating Illinois to move to 2-0 in the Big Ten and 6-0 overall for the first time since 2009.
This marks only the third time the Hawkeyes have started 6-0 since 1985 and only the eighth time in school history they have opened a season by winning their first six games.
Iowa running back Jordan Canzeri ran for 256 yards on a school-record 43 carries. Quarterback Wes Lunt passed for 317 yards and a touchdown for Illinois (4-2).
No. 24 Toledo 38, Kent State 7
Playing as a ranked team for the first time in three years, the Rockets recovered from an early mistake and rolled over Kent State.
The Rockets fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter before taking command and winning their eighth straight game.
Running back Terry Swanson rushed 14 times for 161 yards and a touchdown. Teammate Kareem Hunt, playing in just his second game this season after being slowed by a hamstring injury, scored two touchdowns and finished with 85 yards on 16 carries.
