TIFTON — Troy Spicer has been named Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton effective April 1.

Spicer has served in the interim role as dean since October 2012. “We owe the success of the nursing program here to our excellent nursing faculty at ABAC,” Spicer said. “I am grateful to have the opportunity to lead this group as we continue to educate the best nurses in the state of Georgia. Our primary challenge now is to build on past success and to make changes in the program that will reflect the highly technical nature of health care.”

An ABAC alumnus, Spicer earned his associate degree in nursing in 1982. In 1988, he graduated with bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Medical College of Georgia followed by a master’s from Georgia State University in 1993. Currently, Spicer is in the Doctor of Nursing Science program at Kennesaw State University where, having finished the coursework, he has begun his dissertation research on end-of-life decision making.

Spicer began his work at ABAC in July 2003 as an associate professor of nursing. Spicer is also a family nurse practitioner with experience largely in nursing education and the operation of community-based clinics for the financially deprived. A native of Ocilla, Spicer resides in Alapaha.

The nursing program is the largest single major at ABAC and includes a traditional design as well as the one-year RN track, an accelerated program. Students earn an Associate’s Degree in Nursing and graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN. Currently, ABAC’s nursing programs boast of a 100 percent employment rate.
