U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop secures $1.6 million in funding for Harlem revitalization

ALBANY – The Mt. Zion Community Reinvestment Corp., in partnership with the Harlem Renaissance Corp., announced that $1.6 million in federal funds have been allocated to the Historic Harlem Renaissance Project.
Located in downtown Albany, the Historic Harlem Business District stands as a poignant symbol of civil rights and African American heritage in the city. The Harlem Renaissance Project seeks to honor the rich legacy of this vibrant community by facilitating quality housing options and fostering local economic advancement.
The $21 million initiative will encompass approximately 52 residential units, as well as spaces designated for retail, office, medical facilities, and Albany’s inaugural food hall, Carter’s Food Hall.
The Harlem Renaissance Project is an example of the collaborative spirit of the community and has established partnerships with entities that include the city of Albany, Albany Community Together, Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Albany Technical College, Albany State University, Albany Civil Rights Institute, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop.
Notably, Bishop recently announced the allocation of more than $15 million for 15 community projects across middle and southwest Georgia, with $1.61 million earmarked for the revitalization of the Harlem Business District.
“I am proud to join the many partners who are investing in this very significant project,” Bishop said. “This is a huge undertaking worthy of all hands on deck, and the federal government can be a valuable partner as Albany revitalizes this historic neighborhood whose pivotal role in our country’s civil rights movement echoes to this day. The Renaissance Project is generating new life for this community legacy.
“Thanks to the Mt. Zion Community Reinvestment Corp., the $1.6 million in community project funding our office secured in the Fiscal Year 2024 funding bill will be used to expand www.harlemrenaissanceproject.com affordable housing and help make Harlem a thriving home for families and businesses once again.”
Mt. Zion pastor Daniel Simmons said he is thankful for the support shown by the congressman, the partners, board members, and all those that have contributed to the Harlem Renaissance Project.
“The backing for this initiative has been overwhelming,” he said. “I’m deeply moved by the commitment of those who have generously donated to restore our community. The unwavering and steadfast support from our partners and board members has been invaluable.
“Under the leadership of project consultant Latoya Cutts and her team, we’ve relentlessly worked to ensure that this development is completed. This endeavor epitomizes a community driven project fueled by the values of legacy, restoration, and empowerment.”
Through a capital campaign, the effort has generated nearly $200,000 in contributions from individual donors.
