ALBANY — Dougherty won its second game of the season and ended the tournament on positive momentum with a 61-60 victory over Manchester. The Trojans (2-9) withstood Manchester’s full court pressure to pull out a nail-biting victory.
The Trojans were ahead 53-43 midway through the fourth quarter, but Machester quickly cut the lead to six before Dougherty coach Ty Randolph called a timeout with 3:24 to go. A couple minutes later, the Blue Devils had cut the lead to 59-56 before Charles Porter was fouled and hit one of two free throws to give the Trojans a four-point lead. However, the Blue Devils scored two more baskets off turnovers from their full court press to cut the lead to 61-60.
On the Trojans’ next possession, David Quimby was fouled, but missed both free throws, giving Manchester the ball with 19.2 seconds. With 4.6 seconds left, Manchester’s Demarcus Addie’s shot was missed, but the Blue Devils got the rebound. However, Terrion Brown was called for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to Dougherty with two seconds left and the victory.
Quimby led the Trojans with 15 points, while Porter chipped in 11.
NORTH CLAYTON 68, LEE COUNTY 62: Despite Jalin Wimberly’s 28 points to lead Lee County (5-8), including 14-of-15 from the free throw line, the Trojans struggled down the stretch against North Clayton’s defensive pressure and fell to the Eagles. Malik McCrary also chipped in 10 points for the Trojans.
A late 7-0 run by North Clayton helped the Eagles built a comfortable lead. Kristopher Gardner hit a 3-pointer with 28.2 seconds to go to cut the Eagles’ lead to 66-62, but that was as close as the Trojans would get.
CEDAR GROVE 68, TERRELL COUNTY 28: Terrell County wanted to finish the tournament on a positive note by potentially upsetting unbeaten Cedar Grove. However, the Saints overwhelmed the Greenwaves early and rolled to an easy victory.
Terrell County was led in scoring by Detravion Bishop with nine points.
WESTOVER 48, COLQUITT COUNTY 45: Westover held off stubborn Colquitt County in the final game of the tournament.
Westover’s Alec Williams came up big for the Patriots as he led them in scoring with 18 points, but his biggest contribution came when he hit two key three point shots in the second half, which proved to be the deciding factor in the game. One of those 3-pointers came in the fourth quarter with the Patriots up 43-41.
It gave Westover a five-point lead. Colquitt County would score to cut the lead to three, but that would be as close as the Packers would get. Colquitt County had a chance to get a game tying shot with a little over 10 seconds to go, but Williams came up with a steal, was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the victory.
