UNREVIEWED UNTIL THURS: Fire safety, fun coming Saturday

ALBANY — Residents can learn how to escape from a burning home, support medical facilities that treat burn victims, have a lot of fun, and eat popcorn, hot dogs, chicken wings, ribs, candy and more starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The fun, food and (shhhh … don’t tell anyone) education are all part of a “Give Burns the Boot” state event sponsored by the Albany Fire Department.

“This is our second year supporting the Georgia Firefighter’s Burn Foundation like this,” said Fire Inspector Gwenn Jennings. “We are making this an annual event.”

The foundation is a non-profit organization that educates the public in burn awareness and prevention, supports medical facilities for burn victims and assists burn victims in recovery.

About 12,000 people die in the country each year, Jennings said, and 1,100 of them are children. Using the safe house to inform children how to escape from a fire could lower that number.

“The address of the house is 911,” Jennings said. “We generally bring it to schools. We have a scenario for each room to teach safety.”

Along with the tricycle races, bouncy houses and other amusements for children, games and prizes compliments of the All American Fun Park will be available.

“We are looking forward to the community coming out to support our local fire department,” said Assistant Chief Sebon Burns, “as we raise funds for this statewide campaign.”
