Violent repeat felon gets life in prison

ALBANY, Ga. — A violent criminal is heading to prison for the rest of his life with no chance of parole after being sentenced in Dougherty Circuit Superior Court.

Chief Superior Court Judge Willie Lockette sentenced Kawaski Bush, 36, to life in prison Monday for armed robbery, aggravated assault, theft by taking and use of a gun during the commission of a crime, said District Attorney Greg Edwards.

“Because Bush is a recidivist (repeat offender) the law states that he must get the maximum possible sentence,” Edwards said. “The law also says that the gun charge sentence must be served consecutive to other charges.”

Bush faces many more felony charges from other crimes, Edwards said. With a life sentence, it is probably not cost effective or necessary to prosecute him on those in the near future, he added.

Those charges won’t just go away, Edwards said. They will be available on the off chance an appeal or other legal challenge reverses Bush’s Sept. 14 guilty verdict or the sentence, he said.

In March 2011, Bush and 26-year-old Larrious McCoy stole cash and a vehicle from Marquis Garland at gunpoint. McCoy pleaded guilty, testified against Bush and awaits sentencing.
