WALT SPECHT: Keeping voters in the dark
WALT SPECHT
I often wonder what politicians don’t want the voters to know. With enough research, it probably could be found out, but which voters put in that kind of research?
A couple of questions I have always found to be curiosities. What medical benefits do our elected officials have, and for how long are they in effect? I already know the federal elected officials have a very good deal, but what about the state and municipality?
Just how many elected officials don’t abuse their power? From the state tags I have seen running at least 20 mph over the speed limit, I wonder.
How many times have their relatives used their position to get out of trouble with the law? I have seen several instances over the past 38 years here, even heard some bragging on it. How about job preference? Nepotism is quite common around here.
Then there are the deals. Land deals seem the most obvious lately, but there are others. The cost of the Hilton downtown certainly seems subsidized. Whose alley gets paved and which road gets fixed are also in question. Why not have the paper or the TV do a weekly disclosure on these folks, so the voters know all the benefits these folks derive from the taxpayers?
