Westover boys basketball coach Dallis Smith said Onochie Ochie is not as his prime, yet. After the performance he had during the Patriots, 69-57 win against Terrell County on Saturday night, Smith sees the potential for a breakout season.
Ochie not only scored nine points, but he also had seven rebounds and took three charges.
“That was crucial on those charges,” Smith said. “Those charges were turnovers, and he also came through on the rebounds. He is starting to do other things for the team. He is not in his groove yet, but that’s coming. He’s about to become a complete player.”
Malcolm Sapp led the Patriots (3-0) with 21 points, followed by Chris Wheeler with 17 points and six rebounds. Anthony Ball (12 points, four rebounds) rounded out Westover’s scoring leaders.
Terrell County, meanwhile, was led by Alre’k Brown’s 23 points and 15 rebounds.
“We got in early foul trouble,” said Terrell coach John Davis, whose team now is 2-1. “Our point guard (Terell Hall) got in foul trouble, and we had to make some early adjustments.”
BAINBRIDGE 93, BAKER COUNTY 68: The Bearcats pulled away in the second half to improve to 3-1.
“I only have one part-time starter back from last year’s team (Davario Thomas), and he had 17 points and 12 rebounds for us, so he’s coming along,” Bainbridge coach Rickey McCullough said. “We couldn’t make our shots early, but we began guarding better after halftime and set the tone from there.”
PELHAM 84, CALHOUN CO. 69: Lester Moore led the Hornets (3-0) with 20 points, followed by Darius Thomas (16), Quamaine Thomas (15) and Henry Crimley with 14.
“I think our depth was the difference,” Hornets coach Warren Roberts said. “We trailed by nine in the third quarter and we went up by one by the end of the third. Then, we just outscored them from there.”
The Cougars (3-3) were led by Andre Carroll with 23 points, followed by Knyhiah Zachary with 16 and Marquez Williams with 12.
SOUTHLAND 52, TIFTAREA 38: The Raiders had consistent scoring all four quarters and won this non-region contest easily. Rolie Hancock led the Raiders with 13 points, followed by Andres Chaparro (11 and Kevin Greene (13).
“The first two games, we would score something like 15 in the first quarter and 17 in the second and just fall off from there,” Raiders coach Ernest Scott said. “We got the consistent scoring we needed (Saturday), and also had 20 rebounds and steals for the game. That’ something we can build on.”
GIRLS
BAINBRIDGE 71, ENTERPRISE 60: Alexis Burke led the Lady Bearcats with 26 points, followed by April Thomas (22) and Bria Harris (16).
“Our defense was better,” said Bainbridge coach Latreisha Moon, whose team improved to 7-0. “I was proud of the girls’ effort, we had a tough win against Thomasville on Friday, and it’s good to see other players stepping up. Alexis won’t always be able to do it by herself.”
PELHAM 58, CALHOUN COUNTY 47: The Lady Hornets (2-1) were led by D’Ambria Thomas’ 26 points and seven rebounds.
“She did steals, rebounding, just everything,” Pelham coach Derrick Lavatte said. “She was able to push through and keep us afloat. Once they got within, six or 11, she helped us pull away.”
Tashaunesy Reese had 21 points for Pelham as well. Calhoun County was led by sisters DeAmber Harris and DeAngel Harris with 11 each, and Keiyanna Harris with 15.
TIFTAREA 45, SOUTHLAND 33: Without forward Caitlin Reid, Southland struggled against Tiftarea.
“We don’t have a lot of depth right now,” said Lady Raiders coach Paula McDonald, whose team is 3-1. “We really haven’t, in fact, in the past two years.”
Sara Cathryn Parker led Southland with 11 points.
