ALBANY — Georgia State School Superintendent Richard Woods has named named Westover Comprehensive High School among the 2015 Advanced Placement Honor Schools for Georgia.

Westover earned recognition in four categories: AP Access and Support Schools, AP STEM Schools, AP STEM Achievement Schools and AP Humanities Schools.

“We applaud these AP academic students and AP teachers for meeting the requirements to become AP certified. We are always striving to improve our academics by adding the rigor that is needed at the collegiate level,” Westover Principal William Chunn said. “Our counselors and teachers do a tremendous job of challenging theses students to take our AP classes. With the successful completion of these classes the students have the opportunity to receive college credits while still in high school. To receive AP Honors in four different categories is something to really be proud of and we are. I say to Westover, job well done.”

According to the Georgia Department of Education, AP Access and Support Schools are schools with at least 30 percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African American and/or Hispanic, and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

Similarly, AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AB Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science) and AP Humanities Schools are are schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social science courses, one fine arts course and one world language course. STEM Schools are ones who have students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AB Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science).

As a STEM Achievement School, Westover was one of only 123 schools statewide to have students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and with at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher.

The school is also one of only 54 schools in the state to earn honor school status on the AP Access and Support list.
