ALBANY —The Albany State Rams men’s basketball team will be that much more exciting to watch this upcoming season as Westover High School standout Jordan Floyd signed his letter-of-intent to don the blue and gold Friday afternoon.
After a stellar senior season that included a trip to the state tournament, Floyd said he’s excited to join another former Westover guard at ASU.
“I’ll be there with my brother, Mike Green, and I feel like it’ll be a good fit,” Floyd said. “I know right away I’m going to come into the program and help on the court as fast as I can. I think coach [Michael] Moore will help me be able to take my talents to the next level and hopefully get a ring.”
Floyd added that he’s grateful for the opportunity to represent the hometown at the next level.
“It’s always good when players contribute to their community,” he said. “It’s not often that we have a local player go to a local school, so I know that the community will be there to help me on and root me on and I’m happy for that.”
Westover head coach Dallis Smith said Floyd seized the opportunity to be the number one guy for the Patriots this past season and his elevated play, especially in the region tournament, makes him more than deserving of the scholarship.
“They’re getting a steal,” he said. “They’re getting a steal because his level of play is so high now, especially at the end of the year. I thought he went to another level and with him and Mike Green in the same backcourt, that’s gonna be a good group.”
He’s hopeful that seeing two outstanding players stay at home and help build up a local program will not only give the city of Albany something to cheer about, but influence more of his players down the road.
“Since I’ve been here, it’s only been two. It was Mike last year and Jordan this year, so that means a lot,” he said. “People want to be able to see people that they know and have watched them come up and I think people will have the opportunity to do that next year. I think it’s gonna turn around and get a lot of other people willing to come over and play for Albany State.”
