WFXL to host mayoral debate tonight

ALBANY — With early voting already under way and the Dec. 6 runoff only a few days away, Albany’s two remaining mayoral candidates will take to the airwaves tonight in a live debate hosted by WFXL-TV Fox-31 that will also be streamed live at albanyherald.com.
It’s the second time the TV station has hosted a live debate for the mayoral candidates — the first coming the week prior to the November general election.
WFXL General Manager Brenda Holloway said the event gives the public an opportunity to hear from the candidates before they cast a vote.
“I think that when our viewers and the general public get to ask questions of the candidates, they can really get a true sense of their platforms and how they think on their feet,” Holloway said. “And, its the voters’ last real chance to learn about the candidates before the runoff.”
Local business owner B.J. Fletcher and former city commissioner Dorothy Hubbard are campaigning to fill the seat that will be left when current mayor Willie Adams retires at the end of his current term.
Holloway said that the debate will start during the second portion of the station’s 10 p.m. news broadcast and likely will be extended until 11:15 and will be aired with limited commercial interruption to allow for more questions and expanded answers.
“We’re cutting back the commercial breaks and extending the broadcast so that we can fit as many questions in as possible and to allow the candidates an opportunity to answer the questions thoroughly,” Holloway said.
Viewers can chat about the debate and pose questions for consideration during the broadcast on WFXL’s Facebook page, Holloway said.
Early voting for the mayor’s race and the Ward VI contest between incumbent Tommie Postell and former Dougherty County Commissioner Victor Edwards started Monday and will end Friday at 5 p.m. All 21 city precincts will open Tuesday for voting.
