Just yesterda,y I swore an oath to the citizens of Dougherty County – at least it seems like it was just yesterday. Actually, I swore that oath in January 2009. Since that day, I have done my very best to serve each and every member of this community. I am proud to be the sheriff of Dougherty County, and I am very proud to have had your trust and confidence for the past 16 years.

In the past, I sometimes pondered just how I would feel, retiring with 16 years as Sheriff and a total of 42 years of service with the Sheriff’s Office. Now that the time has come, the only word I can think of is “thankful.” I know that I have been truly blessed to be able to serve the people of this community. I love Dougherty County and its people, and I am very grateful for all of the support they have given me over the years.

I am also reassured by knowing that I am leaving the Sheriff’s Office in good hands. As Terron Hayes takes office, I know that he will continue with the same values and principles that I have adhered to over the years. He also will be inheriting a great staff that will help him guide the Sheriff’s Office into the future.

As sheriff, I knew there were two keys to success: to remain grounded in my faith and to surround myself with good people. I have done my best to remain faithful to God, and the staff of the Sheriff’s Office is the best. Their efforts over the years have made the office what it is, and I am sure that they will work just as hard to ensure the success of Sheriff Hayes.

This is my last article to you, but it is one of my most heart-felt. Thank you very much for all of the support. Thank you for your votes. Thank you for your trust. I pray that God continues to pour out His blessings on this community and on each of you. Farewell.
