Everybody knows the “bad” element of society has increased in size and extremism. Drug possession and distribution have reached Worth County, coming from outside. Law enforcement in all counties is working overtime to control this unsavory element. It is true in our county.

Sheriff Jeff Hobby and our deputies are on continual alert to stop the bad guys before they can get a foothold here. Worth County is one of the largest counties in land area in the state, but we have one of the smallest sheriff’s departments, causing our department to work overtime daily to combat lawbreakers. We are fortunate to have dedicated people willing to take on the task.

Due to a medical condition, I sleep very little and see the deputies everywhere at all hours of the night, covering our county. Sheriff Hobby is on call 24/7. He has worked hard these last four years trying to see that Worth County has the best law enforcement possible with the small force we have. For this reason, I believe it would be a bad mistake to consider any replacement in this election. With the dedication of the sheriff and our deputies, we have a system in place. We should not consider a change of command and “start-over” of organization with the increasing “push” by the criminal element.

There are many things to consider. There is a lot more to being a sheriff than putting bad guys in jail. The sheriff and deputies must know every inch of the county. They must know the people, where they live, where they work and the special needs of some. Everything is not black and white in law enforcement. The sheriff must be able to make on-the-spot decisions in the handling of such cases.

Sheriff Hobby has the ability to see in these cases and has, on many occasions, made decisions that have prevented things from getting out of control. Sheriff Hobby and his department cooperate and work closely with surrounding counties, providing and collecting information that helps keep us safe. The bottom line is we have an excellent sheriff.
