CATHY REVELL: Flint RiverQuarium is an Albany jewel
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Aquarium and museums can be bases for a revitalized downtown area
By Cathy Revell
Earlier this summer, we took our oldest grandsons to Chattanooga for their summer trip. One of the attractions we visited was the Tennessee Aquarium.
While it is much larger than our own Flint RiverQuarium, we were pleasantly surprised to see many of the same animals that we have here at ours. From sea horses, an octopus and other salt-water animals to alligators, sturgeon, snakes and turtles, aquarium visitors are able to view many of those same specimens here.
The RiverQuarium also has an aviary and a teaching garden, and is a wonderful place to visit for all ages. A membership to the Flint RiverQuarium is a bargain and helps support its mission as an environmental education center.
As with our aquarium, the Tennessee Aquarium overlooks the river and has anchored the redevelopment of Chattanooga’s downtown. Citizens came together to support the renewal of the area and Chattanooga now has a thriving downtown.
As plans are made to bring Albany’s downtown back to life, we hope that all citizens of our community will be open to the possibilities of our own city. With the RiverQuarium as the centerpiece, along with the Thronateeska Heritage Museum and the Civil Rights Institute, Albany can once again have a viable downtown.
