LEE W. FORMWALT: Geraldine Hudley best Dougherty School Board choice
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Geraldine Hudley would bring lifestime of experience to School Board
By Lee W. Formwalt
I was delighted to learn Geraldine Hudley is running for the at-large position on the Dougherty County School Board. Should she win, Mrs. Hudley will bring to the board a lifetime of experience as an outstanding educator in the Dougherty County public school system.
I first met Mrs. Hudley nearly 40 years ago when she was a social studies/history teacher at Dougherty County High School and I had just begun teaching at Albany State College. I started an outreach effort to introduce students in the county high schools to the practice of American history at the college level. Mrs. Hudley was outstanding and I marveled at her ability to inspire and challenge her students.
It did not surprise me several years later when the two local teachers’ organizations merged and she became the first African American to be chosen Dougherty County Teacher of the Year. Four times in her 27 years at Dougherty County High School she was named STAR Teacher.
In the 1990s and the following decade Mrs. Hudley became principal of Radium Springs Middle Magnet School of the Arts. There her gifts as a vocal and dramatic artist, teacher, and leader benefited her students and the wider Albany community.
It is important that professional educators, especially such outstanding leaders like Mrs. Hudley, play an important role in the governing body of the Dougherty County School System. The experience and talent such leaders bring to the school board are critical for a group whose majority comes from backgrounds outside education. Mrs. Hudley is an ideal fit for the at-large position. As a community leader she represents the interests of the wider community; as a seasoned professional educator, she brings with her the expertise so necessary for our county’s school board. I think the board will be an even better institution with the addition of Mrs. Hudley to its ranks. I encourage Dougherty County voters to make the better choice in the upcoming primary and vote for an inspiring and highly qualified professional educator by electing Geraldine Hudley to the Dougherty County School Board.
