TEKLA SELLARS: In times like these, a word of thanks
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Law enforcement officers put their lives on the line every day
By Tekla Sellars
With all of the hate going on towards law enforcement in our nation at this time, it is nice to see people showing their support for law enforcement, as well as law enforcement showing the communities that they, too, are human beings, and that ALL LIVES MATTER.
Thank you Officer (Sorry, but I don’t have your rank) Ted Wertz with the Dougherty County Police Department. On July 13, my mother, Wylene Sweat, had truck trouble. She had broken down on Holly Drive on her way home from the Marine Corps Logistics Base. You stopped to check on her, when others just drove on by (which, unfortunately, is the norm these days due to the social norm).
She let you know that she had called me and that a tow truck was on the way. When you asked if there was anything you could do, she asked if you had a bottle of water. You told her no ma’am that you were sorry, but you didn’t have a bottle. After a while, you left, returning shortly with a large bottle of cold water. When my mother tried to pay you, you refused to take any money, and you left only when she had reassured you that the tow truck and myself were on the way.
Thank you again, Officer Ted Wertz, and all of the Dougherty County police, as well as all of those men and women that put their lives on the line every day when they put their badge on and report for duty. Your lives matter; ALL LIVES MATTER.
