TRACY G. IDE: Organ donors are lifesavers
LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Donated organs saved 30,000 lives last year
By Tracy G. Ide
Have you ever had to wait? Perhaps you have had to wait in line at the grocery store or at a stoplight. Imagine, waiting for someone to say yes so you could live. There are more than 121,000 people waiting nationally for a life-saving transplant – more than 5,600 of whom are our friends and neighbors in Georgia.
Last year, more than 30,000 lives were saved thanks to someone’s decision to say yes to organ donation, and hundreds of thousands more were improved through tissue donation. One organ donor can save the lives of eight people, and impact nearly 50 more through tissue donation.
April is Donate Life Month, and I encourage those who have not yet done so to sign up on Georgia’s donor registry by visiting www.donatelifegeorgia.org, or when getting or renewing their driver license. Save lives, say yes.
