Outer Banks Group Facilities Reopening after Tropical Storm Hermine

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

National Park Service facilities on the Outer Banks were reopened Sunday after closure from Tropical Storm Hermine.

All visitor centers at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial are now open. All campgrounds on the seashore are open and the Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island Lighthouses have reopened for climbing.

All off-road vehicle permit offices were opened. Some beach access ramps have reopened for off-road vehicle use.

Current high tides are keeping other ramps closed to off-road vehicle use. These ramps will reopen after it is safe to do so and assessments are completed to protect any remaining sea turtle nests. Please check the seashore’s Facebook page for updated status on access ramps: https://www.facebook.com/CapeHatterasNS

Lifeguards were back on duty and will remain so though Labor Day. Long period swell from Hermine is creating dangerous rip currents and shore break. Visitors should use extreme caution when near the surf.
