ALBANY – Akileis Leroy, one of the top athletes in the area, will be wearing a new jersey this fall.
The linebacker, who played at Monroe High School last season and was named to the Albany Herald’s All-Area Football Team, will suit up for Lee County this season and be eligible immediately, The Albany Herald learned on Wednesday.
Akileis’ father Antonio Sr. said that he has joint custody of Antonio Jr., who is set to play football at Presbyterian this year, and Akileis with the boys’ mother. She recently made a move to Lee County.
In addition to the transfer, Akileis also received an offer from LSU Tuesday night.
According to 247Sports, Akileis will attend camp at LSU on July 22 and 23 with current LSU commit and Lee fullback Tory Carter.
Carter is not the only Division I commit on the Lee roster. Otis Reese, a four-star safety in the 2018 class, and Aubrey Solomon, a 2017 four-star defensive tackle, are both committed to Michigan.
Akileis Leroy will help make what is expected to be a strong Lee County defense even better.
“He is not only a great player, but he’s a great kid,” Lee coach Dean Fabrizio said.
Akileis has also received interest from Auburn, Clemson, Nebraska and Syracuse according to 247Sports. He also holds offers from Central Michigan and Troy.
During his junior season, he made 95 tackles, forced a fumble and registered an interception. He also recorded two sacks.
Akileis is also a star track & field athlete. He won the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA discus title with a throw of 165-feet, one-inch at the state track & field meet and took second in the shot put. He was also named the 2016 Johnny Seabrooks Male Athlete of the Year.
During his career at Monroe, he was also part of the wrestling and baseball team.
