Albany State baseball gets big win over Columbus State

COLUMBUS – Former Terrell Academy star Quintard Wright smacked a bases-loaded, two-out double down the left field line in the fourth inning Wednesday to help the Albany State Golden Rams secure a 7-5 win over Columbus State in Columbus and claim their first win of the season. The win evens Albany State’s record to 1-1 on the season.
The Columbus State Cougars jumped out front with two runs in the second inning when catcher Ian King singled off Albany State starter Landon Kiefer and knocked in Seth Nelson and Trevor Gruszka.
Zane Ross started things off in the fourth inning for Albany State with a single to right center and one out later, Pierce Thomas and Austin Roberts followed with walks to load the bases. After a strikeout, former Terrell Academy star Luke Addison walked to score one run and Wright followed with the base-clearing double that put the Rams ahead 4-2.
Lee County grad Jonathan Logsdon started the fifth for ASU with a double down the left-field line and Ross followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Hill Corley trotted to first base after being hit by a pitch to load the bases before Pearce took a walk to score a run, followed by another walk to Roberts. Bradley Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Corley and the Rams led 7-3.
The Cougars added a solo home run in the seventh from Derek Wylie and got their final run in the ninth.
Landon Kiefer started the game on the mound and pitched three innings. He allowed four hits and two earned runs along with two walks and two strikeouts. Calvin Baker came on in the fourth inning and pitched four innings to earn the win. He allowed three hits and two runs with two walks and four strikeouts. William Beasley pitched the final inning to earn a save for ASU.
The Golden Rams will travel to Milledgeville Tuesday to face Georgia College and host their first SIAC series of the year next Saturday and Sunday in Albany. LeMoyne-Owen College will be in town for a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday with an 11 a.m. start time.
