ALBANY – Albany State quarterback Isaiah Knowles has been named a nominee for the 2024 Harlon Hill Trophy, which honors the most valuable player in NCAA Division II football. The redshirt sophomore from Tampa, Florida, is one of 43 players nationwide vying for the award, often referred to as Division II’s Heisman Trophy.
Knowles is among 12 nominees from Super Region Two and one of three players representing the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), joining Morehouse linebacker Caleb Grant and Clark Atlanta quarterback David Wright III. The award, named after former University of North Alabama star and NFL player Harlon Hill, has recognized Division II’s top players since 1986.
Leading the SIAC in passing touchdowns (34) and yards (2,555) this season, Knowles has been a standout performer. He completed 67.2% of his passes, averaged 255.5 yards per game, and rushed for three touchdowns. Twice this season, he threw six touchdown passes in a single game, including a dominant outing against Morehouse on October 19.
“Glory to God, I am honored to be nominated for this prestigious award,” said Knowles. “My success couldn’t have been accomplished without the help of my teammates and coaches. It’s pretty cool that I get to represent Albany State University and the city of Tampa.”
Albany State head coach Quinn Gray praised Knowles for his leadership and work ethic.
“There is no one more deserving to receive this nomination,” Gray said. “Isaiah exemplifies what it means to represent the Harlon Hill Award. His hard work, commitment, and dedication as a player are unmatched. When we talk about being ALL-IN, that’s Isaiah on and off the field.”
The winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy will be determined by a vote of Division II sports information directors and announced on December 20. Knowles joins an elite group of players, including 2023 winner Zach Zebrowski of Central Missouri, who is seeking to become only the fifth repeat recipient in the award’s history.
Knowles’ nomination reflects not only his individual talent but also the strength of Albany State’s football program. If selected, he would be the first Golden Ram to win the prestigious honor.
