ALBANY — The Westover Patriots used their speed, depth and defense to easily run past the Hardaway Hawks Tuesday night in Albany by a 70-39 in a region matchup. The No. 2-ranked Hardaway Lady Hawks used similar tactics to outrun the Lady Patriots 69-44.
The Patriots jumped on Hardaway early with their speed. Bryson Carter took the ball to the basket on a drive for two and Anthony Milton followed with a drive past the Hardaway defense to put the Patriots up 10-3 early and Hardaway called time to slow down the Patriots.
It didn’t help much.
Westover put in another set of five, but the torrid pace continued and Westover led 28-15 at the half. The second half was more of the same as Westover simply outran the Hawks.
Milton led the Patriots with 15 points, Carter and Traveion Wheeler each scored nine, Braylon Ball put in eight and Gregory Williams added seven.
The win keeps Westover in first place in the region standings with just two region games remaining. Westover and Cairo have one region loss, but Cairo’s loss is to Westover. Westover and Cario will play Friday night in Cairo. If the Patriots win, they will host the region tournament at Westover.
The Lady Hawks of Hardaway won their 16th straight Tuesday night with their win at Westover. The game was close early with Hardaway holding only an 11-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. However, the Lady Hawks put on a full-court press to open the second quarter, and it wasn’t long before Hardaway was ahead 24-9.
Westover’s Jada Landers ended the scoring drought with a long three, but Hardaway maintained control and pulled away for the big win.
Landers led Westover with 19 points and Sydney Donaldson scored 15. MiKayla Johnson poured in 25 points for the Lady Hawks.
Westover will play in Cairo Friday night, then at Terrell County in Dawson Saturday night. The final regular season game will be against Shaw at Westover on Feb. 9.
