Albany Herald Girls Player of the Year

Quadranique Franklin, Pelham, Senior

Why She’s Here: The Herald Super 6er replaced Briunna Freeman as Pelham’s leader. Franklin averaged 17 points, three rebounds and two assists this season. She was an integral part of the Lady Hornets’ strong year.

First Team

Bryshea Jackson, Westover, Senior

Why She’s Here: Jackson was able to do it all for the Lady Patriots. Offensively, she was Westover’s top scorer, averaging 14 points per game and also pulled down 10 rebounds. She played a big part in the Lady Patriots finishing third in Region 1-AAAA.

Timarius Whiting, Terrell County, Senior

Why She’s Here: Whiting was the offensive leader of a Lady Greenwave team that made it all the way to the championship game. The senior averaged 14.8 points per game and was one of the most reliable scorers in the area.

Lynsey Washington, Monroe, Senior

Why She’s Here: Washington was Monroe’s second-leading scorer and one of the best long-range shooters in the area. The Herald Super 6er averaged 15 points per game. She also shot a remarkable 56 percent from behind the arc.

Destiny Thomas, Pelham, Junior

Why She’s Here: Thomas was Pelham’s second leading scorer. She could do just about anything her coaches asked of her on the floor and filled up the stat sheet on a nightly basis. She finished the season with 12 points, four assists and five rebounds per game.

Jamya McDaniel, Terrell County, Sophomore

Why She’s Here: McDaniel teamed up with Whiting to give Terrell a big 1-2 punch. The sophomore averaged 14 points per game and was a sharp-shooter from beyond the arc. She will likely be Terrell’s option on offense next season.

Second Team

Callie Smith, Westwood, Senior

Why She’s Here: Smith was a big reason why Westwood was able to make it to the state championship game. The senior was deadly from 3-point range which was evident in her buzzer-beater to knock out Bulloch Academy in the second round of the playoffs. She averaged 14 points per game and led the Lady Wildcats in assists. Smith also knocked down 75 percent of her free throws.

Lindsey Toneygay, Worth County, Senior

Why She’s Here: Toneygay was dominant in the paint on both defense and offense. She pulled down 13.6 rebounds per game and blocked 3.1 shots — both were good enough for first in Region 1-AAAA. The senior also averaged 8.6 points per game for a much improved Worth County team.

Nyla Perry, Westover, Senior

Why She’s Here: Perry could fill up the basket from long-range with ease. She was the Lady Patriots’ go-to shooter and was a big part of their run. The guard finished the year averaging 10 points per game.

Toddriana Isler, Monroe, Senior

Why She’s Here: At 16 points per game, Isler was Monroe’s leading scorer. She was also one of the Lady Tornadoes’ strongest rebounders, pulling down six boards per contest.

Mahogany Randall, Pelham, Sophomore

Why She’s Here: Randall may not have been Pelham’s top offensive option but she got the job done. She averaged 10 points and four steals a game. The sophomore was a big part of a Pelham team that lost just one regular season game and won the Region 1-AA title.

Third Team

Jasmine Jenkins, Westover, Senior

Why She’s Here: Averaged 10 points per game this season and played a big role for Westover. Just a freshman, Jenkins will be a steady force for the Lady Patriots for years to come. She will likely be relied upon heavily next season to help replace Jackson and Perry.

DeAundra Smith, Worth County, Sophomore

Why She’s Here: Smith was the Lady Rams’ leading scorer and will be huge for them next year. The guard fills up the stat sheet. She averaged 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists this season. The sophomore will likely be Worth’s go-to threat on offense next season.

Haley Marshall, Westwood, Senior

Why She’s Here: Marshall leaves Westwood with four region titles and two state championships. She played a big part in the Lady Wildcats’ run this season. The senior scored 9.2 points per game and led the team with 90 steals.

Jamia Mobley, Mitchell County, Sophomore

Why She’s Here: The offensive force on a Mitchell team that went 18-9 and made it to the first round of the state tournament. Mobley averaged 16 points per game, five assists and four rebounds. She will play a big role for the Lady Eagles next season.

Brittany Williams, Terrell County, Senior

Why She’s Here: Williams gave Terrell County a strong presence in the paint. The senior finished the year with eight points per game and led the team with 9.4 boards. She was a big factor in the Lady Greenwave’s run.
