Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has overtaken Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts as MLB’s top All-Star vote-getter, according to the second update of voting released on Tuesday.
Altuve (1,572,101) narrowly eclipsed Betts (1,568,417), who led the majors with 748,872 votes when last week’s update was released. Altuve had 701,236 in last week’s update.
Topping the National League is Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman (1,433,140), who narrowly leads Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout (1,323,292) for third in MLB. The NL update was released Monday.
By position, only one leader in the AL has changed since last week, with Tampa Bay Rays catcher Wilson Ramos (678,159) overtaking the New York Yankees’ Gary Sanchez (618,899
) by about 60,000 votes after trailing him by about 15,000 a week ago. Each of the other seven positions remain the same at the top, including all three outfielders: Betts in first, Trout in second and the Yankees’ Aaron Judge (1,061,370) in third.
Altuve’s middle infield partner, Carlos Correa, made a big surge, moving from fourth among shortstops to second after more than doubling his votes to 458,367. Beyond Altuve and Correa ranking first and second, respectively, at their positions, Houston has four players ranking third (first baseman Yuli Gurriel, third baseman Alex Bregman, catcher Brian McCann and designated hitter Evan Gattis) and the fifth-ranked outfielder (George Springer). Marwin Gonzalez (eighth) and Josh Reddick (10th) are also in the top 10 among outfielders.
In addition to Betts, the Red Sox have designated hitter J.D. Martinez leading his position, and first baseman Mitch Moreland in second. Andrew Benintendi ranks sixth among outfielders, and Jackie Bradley Jr. ranks 14th.
The Yankees have four players in second at their position (second baseman Gleyber Torres, third baseman Miguel Andujar, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton and Sanchez). After Judge in third, Brett Gardner ranks seventh and Aaron Hicks 13th among outfielders.
The Cleveland Indians have five players in the top-five at their position, including Jose Ramirez leading the way at third base.
The Washington Nationals will host the All-Star Game on July 17.
