AMERICUS — Americus-Sumter hired Larry Harold as its football head coach Thursday night.

Harold, who spent the 2017 season as head coach at Central-Macon, previously was head coach at Macon County, where he turned the Bulldogs’ program into a region champion and state title contender. While there, he coached linebacker Roquan Smith, who went on to star at Georgia and is expected to become a top-10 pick in next month’s NFL draft.

After leaving Macon County, Harold spent two seasons as Brunswick’s head coach. After parting ways with Brunswick following the 2016 season, he took over for former Dougherty head coach Jesse Hicks at Central after Hicks returned to Baldwin.

Harold is 29-34 in six seasons as a head coach, going 19-15 at Macon County, 8-12 at Brunswick and 2-7 at Central. He takes over for Erik Soliday, who retired from the public school system and moved to Tiftarea to become that school’s head coach after leading the Panthers to the GHSA Region 1-4A title last fall.
