ASU sweeps Kentucky State

ALBANY – After struggling earlier in the season, both Albany State teams remain unbeaten in SIAC play after the Rams and Lady Rams defeated Kentucky State Monday. In the men’s game Kentucky State made the first basket of the night 11 seconds into the game. It would be the only time the Thorobreds saw the lead as Albany State rolled over their SIAC foe, 86-53.
Albany State (3-4, 2-0) led in every major scoring category other than second chance points. The Golden Rams bench outscored KSU 42-8. ASU shot 55 percent from the field including 45 percent from long range.
Randy McClure paced the ASU attack, scoring 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting (3-of-4 3PT) while also collecting six rebounds. Jared Harrington added 16 points and six rebounds. Jonathan Henderson scored 12 points and Antoine Gresham netted 11 points.
Kevin Hayes scored 13 points for Kentucky State (3-3, 2-1).
In the women’s game, it took overtime, but Albany State won their second consecutive game and remained unbeaten in conference play as they defeated Kentucky State, 72-69.
Four Golden Rams players reached double-figures in the win, led by Alexandria James who finished with 17 points including a jumper with 13 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game and force overtime.
Trailing by one point with 18 seconds to go in overtime, Yolanda Givens made a contested layup to give Albany State (2-6, 2-0) the lead. ASU then forced a turnover and Givens iced the game by making two free throws after being fouled.
Uchemdirim Ibebunjo posted a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Brooke Wallace had a game-high 21 points for Kentucky State (3-4, 0-2).
The Lady Rams will be on the court again this evening when they host Thomas University at the arena at ASU West. The Rams play on Thursday, November 29th, when they travel to Columbus State for a matchup with the Cougars. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
