The San Diego Padres continued their recent exodus of players by trading outfielder Matt Kemp to the Atlanta Braves for third baseman Hector Olivera on Saturday.
Kemp, 31, was considered a disappointment in his 1 1/2 seasons with the Padres. He is batting .265 with 23 homers and 69 RBIs this season.
Olivera, 31, was eligible to return Monday from an 82-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic-violence policy but the Padres designated him for assignment later Saturday night.
Olivera was arrested April 13 on one count of misdemeanor assault and battery and suspended in May.
Olivera is batting .211 in six games this season. The Cuban defector is the second season of a six-year, $62.5 million contract.
Kemp is in the midst of the fifth season of a eighth-year, $160 million deal signed when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Published reports say the Padres agreed to pay more than $10 million of Kemp’s remaining salary.
Kemp, a two-time All-Star, has 228 career homers in parts of 11 major-league seasons. His best season was 2011 when he batted .324 and led the National League in homers (39) and RBIs (126) and finished second in the NL MVP balloting behind Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun.
Kemp joins pitchers James Shields (White Sox), Fernando Rodney (Marlins), Drew Pomeranz (Red Sox), Andrew Cashner (Marlins) and Colin Rea (Marlins) and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. (Blue Jays) as players the Padres have traded during this season.
