Dansby Swanson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft, was called up by the Atlanta Braves from Double-A Mississippi on Wednesday.
The former Vanderbilt All-American, acquired from Arizona last winter, hit .275 with 39 extra-base hits this season in 107 minor league games, the last 84 with Mississippi.
Swanson is expected to get a good look at shortstop over the final weeks of the season. The Braves envision him being a long-term keystone partner with Ozzie Albies, who’s been moved from short to second base in the minors.
Aybar traded to Tigers
Catcher Kade Scivicque and infielder Mike Aviles were acquired by the Braves in exchange for infielder Erick Aybar on Tuesday. Aybar’s departure created the opportunity for Swanson’s promotion.
Scivicque, 23, is hitting .282 with six home runs for Class A Lakeland this season. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2015 draft out of LSU.
Aviles apparently didn’t figure into the Braves’ plans. He was designated for assignment Wednesday.
Infante released
Second-baseman Omar Infante also was released after batting .209 in 27 games with Triple-A Gwinnett. He was signed to a minor-league deal by the Braves on July 6.
The Braves took a chance that the veteran would rebound after being dropped by Kansas City in late June.
Catching changes
Tyler Flowers is back in harness, but the Braves announced Wednesday that fellow catcher A.J. Pierzynski has been placed on the 15-day D.L. with a strained left hamstring.
