Atlanta United FC defender and six-time MLS All-Star Michael Parkhurst announced his retirement Monday, effective at the end of the season.

Parkhurst, who played 24 games for the United States Men’s National Team, has made five trips to the MLS Cup final — most recently last season when Atlanta United won the title. It was his first MLS championship.

Parkhurst, 35, has one career MLS goal in 2007 as a member of the New England Revolution. He has six career assists over his 10 MLS seasons with New England, Columbus and Atlanta United FC. The Wake Forest product also played professionally in Denmark and Germany.

The 2005 MLS rookie of the year was also named the league’s defender of the year in 2007.

Atlanta United (17-11-3, 54 points) is in second place in the Eastern Conference and already has clinched a playoff spot. The team has three regular-season games remaining.
