The Colorado Avalanche re-signed defenseman Mark Barberio to a two-year contract through the 2019-20 season, the team announced Tuesday.

The deal will pay Barberio $1.45 million annually, according to a report from the Denver Post. The defender was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Barberio, 28, matched a career high with 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) this season despite playing only 46 games. He missed nearly three months as the result of a lower-body injury suffered in January, returning for the final two games of the regular season before registering an assist in one of Colorado’s six postseason games.

“Mark has been a steady part of our blue line since joining the team and has helped solidify our defensive depth,” Avalanche executive vice president and general manager Joe Sakic said in a team release. “He has played important minutes for us and has been a key penalty killer. We are pleased to have Mark under contract for the next two seasons.”

For his career, Barberio has 13 goals and 40 assists in 239 NHL games across six seasons. The Avalanche added him on a waiver claim from the Montreal Canadiens in February of 2017.

Colorado signed defenseman Mark Alt to a two-year contract last week.
