Basketball Shorts: More history from Acree as Monroe sweeps, Deerfield-Windsor wins twice
Monroe and Deerfield-Windsor on top!
Monroe sweeps Randolph-Clay
ALBANY – Kie’Aundria Acree keeps finding new ways to turn ordinary nights into history.
The Monroe junior guard scored 32 points Saturday night — and in the process became the all-time leading scorer in the Dougherty County School System, passing former Dougherty star Jennifer Robinson — to lead the No. 3-ranked Lady Tornadoes to an 86-33 rout of Randolph-Clay.
And yes, she’s still just a junior.
Acree didn’t stop with the milestone. She filled up the stat sheet with 18 rebounds and 12 assists to record a triple-double in a performance that was as complete as it was dominant. Maleyah Hines was nearly as imposing, piling up 27 points and 25 rebounds for a massive double-double, while Taylor McKinzy added 18 points as Monroe improved to 13-2 on the season.
The boys’ game was far more competitive, but the No. 8-ranked Tornadoes still pulled away late for a 65-53 win at Monroe High School to complete the sweep. Monroe, now 13-3, got 19 points from Brayden Burns and 10 from Tristen Terry. Kameron Jones and Elijah Rivers chipped in eight points apiece.
Randolph-Clay was led by Tyrion Smith with 18 points, while Nikevous Josey scored 13 and Raeshawn Clyde added 12.
The Tornadoes will face a tough road stretch this week, playing at Peach County on Thursday and at Bainbridge on Friday.
Deerfield-Windsor wins twice
It doesn’t get much more dramatic than that.
Deerfield-Windsor senior Jack Moore knocked down a 3-pointer with just three seconds left Saturday afternoon to lift the Knights to a thrilling 37-36 win over visiting John Milledge Academy, improving their record to 12-2.
The game was tight from start to finish, and the visiting Trojans managed to outscore Deerfield-Windsor in the fourth quarter as the Knights scored just six points in the period. But Moore’s final shot erased that deficit and sent the home crowd home happy.
Lane Sceals led the Knights with 15 points, including five 3-pointers, while Brady Harris added seven.
The night before, Deerfield-Windsor had a much smoother ride.
The Knights jumped out to an early 20-point lead Friday night and never looked back in a 47-33 win over Valwood. With the game in hand, coach Rundy Foster was able to go deep into his bench. David Hutchins led the way with 23 points.
Deerfield-Windsor will continue region play by hosting Southland Academy on Tuesday before traveling to Tiftarea on Friday.
