Basketball Shorts: Nothing but sweeps on Tuesday night
Big night for local basketball teams.
Dougherty, Monroe, Westover, Lee County, Calhoun County, and Sherwood Christan all won both games
FT. VALLEY – The Dougherty Trojans used strong second-half runs to sweep Peach County in region play Tuesday night. The Lady Trojans rallied for a 60-57 win, while the boys took a 59-48 victory.
The Lady Trojans erased a 54-48 deficit in the fourth quarter with a nine-point run. Senior All-State guard Jatiana Chambers led a balanced attack with 13 points, followed by Za’Miya Mitchell with nine, and D’Asia Simmons and Teayliah Hawkins with eight each. Amiyah Jackson added seven points and grabbed 14 rebounds.
In the boys’ game, the Trojans broke open a 22-22 halftime tie with a 16-2 third-quarter run, taking a 43-32 lead into the final period. Jerimiah Kitchens led with 14 points, while Jaquavus Hallman and Davious Johnson added 10 each.
“This has been our worst defensive year in my six seasons,” said Dougherty Head Coach Bakari Bryant. “Offense comes and goes, but defense travels. Our guys stepped up in the second half, played better defense, and trusted their weapons on offense.”
Dougherty plays at Cairo Friday and hosts crosstown rival Westover Tuesday.
CAIRO – The Monroe Golden Tornadoes swept Cairo in dominant fashion Tuesday night. The girls won 86-29, and the boys rolled to a 95-36 victory.
Monroe’s Kie’Aundria Acree had a career night, scoring 44 points with 15 rebounds, six assists, four steals, and three blocks. Taylor McKinzy added a personal best with 31 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists.
For the boys, 12 players scored, led by Nehemiah Tinch with 19 points and Lorenzo Still with 18. Chase Dixon and Lammond Seadrow each added 10.
Monroe’s girls are now 9-5, while the boys improved to 7-7. They host Westover Friday and travel to Randolph-Clay on Saturday.
WARNER ROBINS – Lee County swept Northside-Warner Robins in region play Tuesday. The No. 6-ranked Trojans cruised to a 66-36 win, and the Lady Trojans took a 34-24 victory.
Lee County (10-4) had a balanced scoring effort, with Braden Moore leading with 12 points, Kameron Sanders adding 11, and TJ Williams contributing 10.
The Lady Trojans (9-5) were paced by Camya Hutcherson with nine points and Taliyah Porter with seven.
Lee County visits Veterans Friday and hosts Coffee Saturday.
BAINBRIDGE – The Westover Patriots swept Bainbridge Tuesday, with the boys winning 57-41 and the girls taking a 47-38 victory.
Westover (8-3) built a 32-16 halftime lead and never trailed. Bryson Carter and Jalen Holmes led with 15 points each. The Patriots have won five straight.
EDISON – Calhoun County dominated Quitman County Tuesday night, with the Lady Cougars winning 50-16 and the No. 2-ranked Cougars cruising to a 91-28 victory.
Zechariah Canidate led the Cougars (12-0) with 21 points, followed by Jaylin Logan with 18 and Jadon Welch with 14. Calhoun County faces Pataula Charter Friday and Early County Saturday.
NEWTON – Sherwood Christian swept Baker County on Tuesday. The Lady Eagles earned a 48-43 win, while the boys cruised to a 76-33 victory.
Olivia Keith led the Lady Eagles with 19 points, while Tripp Roberts scored 23 for the boys, including 19 in the first half.
Sherwood resumes region play Friday at Southland Academy and travels to Westwood Tuesday.
