Basketball Weekend includes two rivalry games for Dougherty

Now that the high school football season is officially complete, the focus is turning to basketball and local teams have big weekend games coming up as they prepare for the holiday tournaments.

The Dougherty County Trojans (6-4) have two big rivalry games this weekend on the road. Friday the Trojans will invade the Boston Garden at Westover for a battle with the Patriots. Westover (0-5) is still looking for its first win of the season. The Trojans have won three straight and will finish their weekend with a trip to Leesburg to face Lee County again. Lee was the last team to beat Dougherty earlier this season, but only by a basket. Lee County barely survived a huge comeback by Dougherty and held on for a 93-91 win.

The Monroe High Golden Tornadoes (3-3) have Friday and the weekend off after beating Lee County 68-62 Wednesday. Their next game will be in Cuthbert on Tuesday against Randolph Clay.

The Deerfield Windsor Knights (4-1) have won four straight but they are off this weekend and all next week until they face Stewart County in U-Save It Classic at Monroe next Friday night.

Terrell Academy (3-3) will travel to Chula Friday night for another round with Tiftarea. The Eagles dismantled Tift Area last week 64-41. The Eagles will host Westfield of Perry on Tuesday.

Mitchell County (2-2) will host Brooks County (2-2) Friday night in Camilla and then travel to Dawson for a region 1-A bout with Terrell County (6-1). The Eagles are coming off a loss to 7th ranked Seminole County and the Greenwave is coming off their first loss of the season to defending region champ Calhoun County. Calhoun remains unbeaten after winning at home 63-57.

Ranked ninth in Class A, the Pelham Hornets (1-1) are getting into the basketball season this week in four games on tap. The Hornets lost to defending AA state champion Thomasville Tuesday night in a tough matchup 54-50. Thursday night they played in Donaldsonville against Seminole County. The Hornets will host Baker County (0-4)Friday night and then Worth County (5-2) Saturday night at the Hornet’s Nest in Pelham. Before traveling to Pelham, Worth County will host the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane on Friday.

Westwood will take on Windsor Academy of Macon Friday night and then be off until they play in the Brookwood Christmas tournament in Thomasville.

The 6th ranked Calhoun County Cougars (7-0) have a Friday night has a home region game with Webster County and will then host defending state champion Montgomery County Saturday in Edison.
