While the Buffalo Bills added several key players with the start of the league year Wednesday, they also snuck in a notable subtraction.
The Bills released veteran wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the reserve/retired list, freeing the 37-year-old to sign with another team if he chooses.
Boldin signed with the Bills last summer before retiring in August during training camp in order to focus on his humanitarian work. He expressed interest in a return to action elsewhere last season, but the Bills wouldn’t oblige his request, opting to retain his rights.
Boldin caught 67 passes for 584 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 games with the Detroit Lions in 2016. The three-time Pro Bowler retired with 1,076 receptions for 13,779 yards and 82 touchdowns across his 14 seasons in the NFL, which he spent with the Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals.
